Our History
The first school of Kilinochchi district was established in 1927 by Sir Pon. Ramanathan in the heart of the town, where the Kilinochchi Maha Vidyalayam is currently located near Kakkakadai junction along Wilson Road. Surrounded by water sources and lush green lands, the school aimed to provide proper education to the children of workers involved in the construction of the Iranamadu Tank.
Later, the Paranthan Chemical Factory, initiated by Mr. G. G. Ponnambalam, led to an increase in student enrollment as the children of factory employees began attending the school. The number of students surged from 250 to approximately 1,000 by 1965. Facing a shortage of classrooms, the then-principal, Late Mr. M. Shanmuganathan, sought to acquire new land to improve the learning environment.
With the collective efforts of Parliamentarian Mr. V. Ananthashankari, the Parents-Teachers Association, and the School Development Board, 50 acres of land were secured in 1947 under the guidance of the Government Agent of Jaffna. Although the land was initially dense jungle, the local community and Rural Development Society cleared 4 acres through Shramadana efforts, and construction of new school buildings began with financial support.
On September 21, 1977, the Kilinochchi Maha Vidyalayam transitioned into its new location, marking a significant milestone. The newly constructed buildings began hosting classes from grade 7 to Advanced Level (A/L), while grades 1 to 6 continued at the original site. In 1982, additional facilities were introduced, and students excelled not only academically but also in extracurricular activities, with achievements such as Mast. K. Gowreesvaran being admitted to the medical faculty.
Over the years, the school endured challenges, including damage during the 2007–2008 conflict and temporary relocation to serve as a transit camp for internally displaced persons in 2010. Despite these hardships, the school was included in the 'Isuru School System' and resumed its operations in renovated buildings in 2011, continuing its mission to educate and empower the youth of Kilinochchi.
